Under the category of “why didn’t I think of this before” – take advantage of your child’s fascination with text messaging to send them reminders for things they need to remember, like taking their medicine or staying on task.

For some things (like taking meds), you might even want to come up with a “code” – some sort of phrase that the two of you agree means something else in order to avoid embarrassment. For instance, you might send a text message that says “eat a good lunch today” or “have a good day” when what it really means is “remember your meds”.

If your phone won’t let you set up a repeating message to be sent daily, you can use a service like Jott. I use Jott all the time to help me remember ideas I’ve had while I’m doing something else, like driving. The added bonus is that it’s free.

Give this idea a try and see how it works. I bet you can come up with all sorts of uses for it.

Last week, my youngest daughter taught me a valuable lesson about Attention Deficit Disorder and being overwhelmed, although she didn’t intend to do so. I think it’s important enough to share with you.
