The ADHD Athlete

Have you and your family been watching the Olympics? I guess much of the world has tuned in at some time or other. Isn’t it amazing to see so many gifted athletes competing against one another? And you know, even those that don’t win a medal ought to be proud just to be able to compete.
You know, getting a child involved in sports is a good thing, for so many reasons. They learn teamwork, fair play, how to work with others, and so much more. Athletics are good for all kids, but they are especially good for kids with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Exercise is one important benefit of participating in a sport on a regular basis. Exercise has been proven to help clear the mind and let ADD kids focus more effectively.
Another benefit of team sports is in the social aspect; kids with ADHD have a better chance of developing their social skills within a team environment. In addition, the focus is on athletic ability rather than academic performance. Your ADHD child has as much chance as any other child to excel because their ADD symptoms are less likely to be a concern.
Sports can also help your child build their self-esteem, especially if they find they have a natural talent for a particular sport, and they can also provide an outlet for letting off steam, relaxing, or just plain fun.
As you watch the Olympics, take note of the wide variety of options there are, and see if your child expresses an interest in one. Wouldn’t it be great to attend some future Olympic games to watch your child compete? You never know….
