Before I end my discussion about creativity, I wanted to make one more final observation. Someone reminded me of this earlier this week, and I thought it was important enough to share.
I spend a lot of time pointing out the positive things about Attention Deficit Disorder, mostly because there are plenty of people who will be glad to tell you all the negative things. Sometimes, though, you’ve got to take the bad with the good.
Creativity doesn’t just exist in art and athletics and perfect pie crusts. It can also exist in things like telling lies, manipulating people and making things to be other than what they are.
All parents have had an experience when their child lied to them, or tried to cover up the truth. Part of parenting is teaching kids about the difference between right and wrong, and holding them accountable.
Sometimes, though, for many different reasons, kids (and adults) cross that line into doing wrong on purpose. Obviously, it isn’t just people with ADHD who do those kinds of things, but ADDers do seem to be more skilled at such things.
I don’t really have an answer for you on this, other than to say that if you suspect you’re being deceived, dig deeper until you find out the truth. People who become good at fooling others will continue to do so; as a concerned parent you want to catch this as soon as you can, because the stakes only get higher the longer they get away with it.
