I’m Not Stupid, I Have ADD

Over the weekend, I heard about a great offer to benefit Autism. A dad who has an Autistic son was offering a number of business related resources in exchange for a donation to his favorite charity.
I was more than happy to help for such a worthy cause, and because he truly was offering some very valuable information.
After I made my donation, I was directed to a page containing 15 or more links to the various products. Since the products were donated by a number of generous people, each link led to a different site.
When I found 4 links that didn’t take me where I was supposed to be, I contacted the man makng the offer. I sent 2 emails – one after the first broken link, and then another when I discovered the other 3.
He was very nice in response to the first email, but in the second, he was a bit condescending.
One of the sites required a user name and password, which had been provided. I’m not stupid; I have ADD. I know how to do this; all of my sites require the same thing. I do it all day long, every day.
I entered the correct name and password, and was taken to a page that said what I was looking for couldn’t be found.
How can this be happening just to me and no one else? Does he know I have ADD, and that’s why he makes an assumption that I must be wrong and he must be right?
I don’t know if that’s the case, but that’s sure what it feels like. I’ve felt this way before, and I bet your child has, too.
Sometimes we don’t get it, or we think we’re right when we’re not. Sometimes we speak too soon. If we would slow down a little and take another look, we would see that. But that’s not our nature.
If that happens more than once or twice, especially if someone knows you have ADD, some people start to make assumptions about our intelligence. That’s hurtful and frustrating, and if it happens enough, sometimes it makes you want to quit trying. You start to believe that it’s true.
Just because our minds work differently than most does not mean we are inferior. We are not a “deficit” nor a “disorder”; just different.
Maybe I’m wrong about this guy. I could be making another hasty decision. I sure hope so.
