Someone asked me today about high risk behavior and ADHD. There is a definite connection between the two, and while it can be dangerous at any time, I think that parents of ADHD teens ought to be especially watchful.

Think about some of the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder:

    Impulsive behavior
    Low threshold for boredom
An emotional age 3-5 years younger than their actual age
A tendency to look for an adrenaline rush

Now consider the things that teens are faced with, at an age when they have little or no lifetime experience as a reference:

    Drugs
    Alcohol
    Sex

Driving is more dangerous with an ADHD teen behind the wheel, and even getting a job – imagine an easily distracted teen slicing meat at the local deli.

Of course, some high risk behavior is chosen and some is not. However, other factors of the ADHD equation can play into these decisions. Many people with Attention Deficit Disorder have poor social skills, or they are uncomfortable socially. They might choose to use drugs or alcohol as a way to help them relax and feel as though they fit in.

Anger issues (which sometimes accompany ADHD) or even just being easily distracted can make any driver with ADHD more dangerous.

For most people, getting older and getting some life experience under their belt helps keep the risk taking to a minimum. For others, it’s a lifetime battle.

As a parent, all you can do is be aware, be more watchful, and try to help your child see how high risk behavior and ADHD are a bad combination.
