Home schooling to me has always seemed like a sort of controversial topic. The parents who had their kids in public or private schools couldn’t understand the parents who home schooled their children. I don’t mean to be offensive to anyone, but I think a lot of home schooling parents are looked at by others as a little different.
More and more lately, I am hearing about the idea of homeschooling kids with Attention Deficit Disorder. Many parents have contacted me telling me how good it has been for their child. Of course, I don’t think I hear from the ones who tried it without success.
Homeschooling isn’t for everyone; I know I considered it a few times, but never felt capable enough to try it. My youngest asked me to teach her to read when she was 3 or 4, and by the time I felt prepared a few weeks later, she had taught herself.
I have no authority to speak on this subject, but I think that for some kids with ADHD and their parents, home schooling could be the right answer. Thomas Edison, thought by many to have had ADHD, was asked to leave school when he was 10, I believe. The school told his mother he was unteachable. I think she did a great job home schooling him.
Anyway, if this is something you’ve been thinking about, or even if you just want to polish your own skills to be more effective as the homework helper, I thought I would pass on a few resources.
Homeschooling ADD Kids is a blog and resource site for homeschooling parents. The owner, Kevin Broccoli, started it after he, his wife, and mother in law, began homeschooling his 12 year old brother in law, who has ADD. Kevin’s site looks fairly new but valuable.
LD Online is one of my all time favorite resources, and they have info about home schooling and ADHD too.
Homeschooling Boys has a wealth of information, both about ADHD and home schooling. You may find it useful, even if your ADDer is a girl.
If you home school, or have tried it, please share your experiences.
