Map It Out

If you are very lucky, your ADD Student may have a teacher or two who has given them an overview of what to expect this semester, including when any long term assignments are due. (If not, you can always ask.)
Now while the school year is fresh, start mapping out the year.
Most families keep a family calendar somewhere in the house that notes each family member’s activities. A lot of moms keep their own calendar too, which is OK as long as you are 110% sure that the two are exactly the same.
Once you find out about a long term assignment and when it’s due, note the due date on the calendar. Then start mapping out a plan of attack. Enlist your ADD Student’s help in this, but expect to be the one steering the action. As far as they’re concerned, a 20 page report due in 6 weeks is a lifetime away and they’re got all the time in the world.
Start by estimating how long the assignment will take and then add an extra week or two. Decide what steps need to be taken – choose a topic, go to the library, do some research, do an outline, a rough draft and then a finished copy. You may want to break some steps up even further – getting your child to do 15 minutes worth of work per day on an assignment might be easier and more productive than spending all Saturday afternoon on it.
Once you have the steps down, assign a due date to each. Be sure to check for other activities in that time period that may take time away from this project.
Help your child stay on top of his progress so that he doesn’t fall behind. Regardless of how old they are, most ADD Students need more supervision than you might think. (Until their mid-twenties, most ADDers are 3-5 years behind their actual age in terms of maturity.)
Be sure to reward your ADD Student for sticking with the task and staying on plan. It doesn’t have to be anything big – a few words of praise from you, an extra half hour of TV, whatever.
The biggest reward will come when the assignment is done on time and done well.
