Getting the Basics

As the parent of an ADD Student, it’s up to you to make sure that the basics are covered when it comes to learning.

Each of us has strengths as well as weaknesses, and we all benefit when we learn to minimize our weaknesses and maximize our strengths.

Some weaknesses are things that are just a part of who we are. For instance, if you have poor short term memory, that’s something that you will always have. What you need to do is learn to compensate for it by finding ways to help you remember.

For a lot of ADD Students, part of their weaknesses come from things that they missed in school or that they never grasped properly.

For instance, the semester that my class learned decimals and percentages, I was out sick for an entire month. I never understood them until I got a job after school at a department store and learned to figure out what my employee discount was for something that I wanted to buy.

My daughter Sarah has always had trouble with multiplying and dividing because her fourth grade teacher rushed through those lessons. Luckily for her, there are calculators to help her.

If you have an ADD Student who’s missing a basic part of their education, don’t wait to do what you can to correct it. It doesn’t matter how old they are – filling in those missing gaps or helping them find ways to compensate for them is a lifelong gift.
