School and Stress

Is school stressful for your ADD Student?
It often is.
Consider that they have trouble paying attention, staying on task, completing the work, and remembering to do the work.
Add in the fact that their social skills may not be as good as they could be, meaning that they may not have many friends.
How would you perform in a work environment such as that? How willingly would you go to work and do your best day after day when facing that kind of odds?
School can absolutely be stressful for kids with ADHD.
And when someone is stressed out, it makes it harder to concentrate, to think and to focus.
Sort of a Catch-22, isn’t it?
So what can you do about it? After all, kids need an education.
Yes, of course they need an education. But how good will that education be if they are too stressed to learn?
Some parents choose to home school their children, and for many, it works out very well.
Some parents may choose to switch schools; say from a public to a private school with smaller class sizes. And again, that can be effective.
A lot of parents, though, don’t have either option.
In that case, your job may be a little bit harder, but you can help your child cope more effectively.
Here are some ideas:
Make sure that they have time every day to just relax and unwind.
Teach them coping skills to help when they get stressed and relaxation skills, too.
Help them find an outside activity that they enjoy and are good at. Maybe it’s sports or dance or even theater. Everybody deserves a place where they shine.
Work with them to keep their self esteem intact. Grades are just one part of our lives. It is possible to be highly successful and happy without having earned good grades in school.
School is important for lots of reasons, but the one parents focus on most is that it can help your child get a good job and earn a good living. Try to focus more on your child’s strengths and talents in terms of their future.
And above all, take care of the basics like making sure they have enough sleep and good healthy food to eat.
Stress is a lot easier to beat when you’re healthy.
