Coaching for ADD Students
| August 3, 2010 | Posted by Brenda under ADD |
When I first became an ADD Coach, my intent was to help kids (students) with Attention Deficit Disorder.
I believe that people with ADHD are very intelligent, but rarely perceived as such. I also think that most have more potential than they ever realize.
There aren’t too many coaches out there that work with teens or students with ADHD, including, at the moment, me. (Part of that reason is my soft heart. When you start worrying about kids you’ve never met face to face and who live thousands of miles away, you need to step away for your own sake.)
The fact is that coaching kids is hard work with very little rewards. It’s wonderful when you can truly help a child succeed in school, but the truth is that most people who contact me for coaching are the parents.
The parents see that the child needs help, but the child rarely agrees. Without their cooperation, it’s an uphill battle at best.
At the same time, I believe that coaching our young people with ADHD is an investment in all of our futures. They have so much to give; they just need some direction.
I also believe that our school systems need to make some dramatic changes in the way that they teach. That’s a battle for all of us.
I’m working on what I hope will be some good solutions for all of us: parents, ADD Students, coaches, and society in general.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
