Having a study partner can benefit most students. ADD Students, given the right partner, can benefit tremendously.
Most kids with ADHD are more intelligent than their grades might suggest. A big part of poor grades for them starts with missing key ideas in class, not hearing or remembering homework assignments, and/or forgetting to turn homework in.
A study partner – someone in the same class – can compare notes with your child. It’s probable that they might have caught some things that your child missed. It’s also possible that your child caught some things or made some connections with the material that their partner did not.
Partners are also useful when studying for an exam. They can test one another, discuss the material and lead to a deeper understanding of the subject.
It can be hard to find a study partner for your child. Start by looking at their friends or kids in their class that you may know. You might also consider a child a little bit older who has taken the class or knows the material. In this case they might function more as a tutor.
If your child has an accommodation in place for note taking, you can have the teacher appoint someone to provide a copy of notes for your child.
Finally, if you have a college near you that offers a teaching degree, call and ask about having one of their students meet with your child. They could spend a few hours with them and teach them better and more effective study skills.
